4 minutes 51 seconds| This combined work was started and finished in the waning days of January 2019. Beyond doubt, the impression here is one of three (and not two) pieces, with shredding guitars seeming to come out of nowhere. Five of Cups spins its web of mystery through a syncopated drum track played under strings and woodwind. These instruments similarly lack a strong downbeat. The speed at which this work was written is an endeavor to get away from a rut. A comfort zone imbues a good many works written in 2018. The beginning of Maragine Hammer is in that zone, with its developmental section being added lastly as a buffer.
