4 minutes 43 seconds| Like Mokele-Mbembe, Felix Cupa, and Windowpane, a female vocal does much of the heavy lifting. The muted mens choral hymn that comes out of nowhere in the middle of this piece is one of my more inspired interludes.
A visual element lies behind writing music for me, whether at the keyboard or looking over notation on a staff. I attribute this to my background as a visual artist.
When I listen to the music of Thelonious Monk, for example, I picture blocks of percussive notes being punched into the piano like rivets laid into a steel girder. Visually this may be related to Pablo Picasso’s Cubist approach to painting. As for myself, I cut, extend, and splice regions of measures like strips of tape.
